Forest Hill
The enormous stuffed walrus shows how easily large beasts were once slaughtered. In 1886, its sighting was enough to tempt Mr JM Hubbard to shoot it and give it pride of place back at the Manitoba Gun Club, of which he was President.
It might still be there had not tea millionaire and eccentric collector, Mr Frederick Horniman, spotted it, bought it on the spot and taken it home to his museum.
The walrus lacks the characteristic wrinkles – the Canadian taxidermist had obviously never seen a live example and so stuffed it to the gills (or at least the tusks).
